The understanding of melasma has evolved, and it’s more complex than once thought. Therefore, successful management of this chronic inflammatory and pigmentary skin disorder requires a multimodality approach rather than a single treatment method.
In this Next Steps in Derm video interview, in conjunction with the Pigmentary Disorders Exchange Symposium, Mona Gohara, MD, FAAD, details the role of tranexamic acid in a melasma treatment plan. Dr. Gohara, associate clinical professor of dermatology at Yale School of Medicine, shares which melasma patients would benefit the most from tranexamic acid, whether in its topical or oral form. In addition, she shares screening questions dermatology clinicians should ask before prescribing to avoid serious side effects.
Tranexamic acid can be part of a comprehensive melasma treatment approach that includes other proven topicals, such as hydroquinone, retinoids, antioxidants, and thiamidol. A combination, multimodal approach is key for melasma treatment success.
